Placing Jewish Youth Philanthropy in an Historical Context

by Dr. Jonathan Sarna, Joseph H. & Belle R. Braun Professor of American Jewish History at Brandeis University and Director, Hornstein Jewish Professional Leadership Program

Jewish youth foundations, individual endowment accounts for teens, and 7th grade funds are relatively new developments in our community. But the coming together of young people around areas of common interest is not new; indeed, we can point to various moments in Jewish communal history when young people joined together and brought about significant social change. Dr. Sarna will examine several examples of young people mobilizing for change throughout modern Jewish history, as well as trends and shifts in Jewish philanthropy, highlighting key lessons we may draw from them to better understand today's jewish youth philanthropy movement. (25 minute presentation followed by 20 minute Q&A).
