J.J. Greenberg Memorial Award

The J.J. Greenberg Memorial Award was established in 2002 to honor foundation professionals age 40 and under who have demonstrated extraordinary leadership in the field of Jewish philanthropy. The award is presented biennially to an individual who, like its namesake, has exemplified through both words and deeds the highest of Jewish values and the relentless pursuit of excellence in all aspects of life. Past recipients include Rachel Levin, executive director of the Righteous Persons Foundation and Sharna Goldseker, Vice President of the Andrea and Charles Bronfman Philanthropies.  To learn more about the 2008 awardee, Joanna Ballantine, click here.

Created and endowed as a memorial to Jonathan Joseph Greenberg by his friends and colleagues, this award recognizes J.J. for his contributions to Jewish life and helps to advance the field of Jewish philanthropy by:

•    Inspiring and challenging all foundation professionals to embody the values that defined his career;
•    Encouraging more people like J.J. to enter the field; and
•    Celebrating the accomplishments of the recipients. 

J.J. served as executive director of the Steinhardt Foundation/Jewish Life Network (JLN) from its inception in 1995, working closely with his father, Rabbi Irving “Yitz” Greenberg, the foundation’s president, and its chairman, Michael Steinhardt.  J.J. assisted in creating such landmark programs and institutions as birthright israel; the Makor center on Manhattan’s Upper West Side; the Partnership for Excellence in Jewish Education (PEJE); Synagogue Transformation and Renewal (STAR); and the Jewish Early Childhood Education Partnership.  He also helped oversee national programs in conjunction with Hillel and the Jewish Heritage Program, among others.  J.J. was a spontaneous personality who enjoyed a wide range of interests.  Possessed of an infectious enthusiasm, he spoke fluent Hebrew, took great joy in his work, demonstrated great vision and achieved impressive results in all of his endeavors.  

Recipients of the J.J. Greenberg Memorial Award will receive an item of Judaica and a cash prize in the amount of $5,000 to be used for professional development or tzedekah (charity).

ELIGIBILITY
All foundation professionals (age 40 and under) engaged in grantmaking and involved in Jewish causes are eligible.  JFN membership is not required, and preference will be given to those who contribute to Jewish life through their professional activities.

AWARD CRITERIA
The criteria for this award reflect the qualities for which J.J. was admired and which have established him as a role model.  Candidates should:

•    Be of good character, exhibiting qualities such as humility, kindness, thoughtfulness, and humor;
•    Display creativity and innovation in their professional work;
•    Possess strong leadership and communication skills;
•    Demonstrate a broad understanding of the commitment to tikkun olam (repairing the world);
•    Be collaborative and persuasive advocates for Judaism, Jewish causes, Israel and clal Yisrael and committed to the full integration of Jewish living in the general society; and
•    Show potential for growth and advancement in the field of Jewish philanthropy. 
 
THE NOMINATION AND SELECTION PROCESS

Nomination forms for the J.J. Greenberg Memorial Award will be available in the fall of 2008.

Nominations for the J.J. Greenberg Memorial Award must include a completed nomination form, two references and a resume or biographical statement of the nominee.  Anyone may submit a nomination, and self-nominations are acceptable.  Nominations submitted in prior years may be resubmitted, but must be accompanied by complete, current nomination materials.

The award will be administered by the Jewish Funders Network (JFN).  A selection committee, including the immediate past recipient of the award, will review each nomination and select the winner.  The decision of the selection committee is final and is not subject to review by the staff or board of JFN.
