NEWS FROM OUR MEMBERS

Natan Launches Committee Addressing Poverty

The Natan Fund, a JFN member, has launched a Confronting Poverty Committee and — in a participatory grantmaking approach — is seeking nominations for individuals with lived experiences with poverty to serve on it. The committee will be charged with reviewing proposals from organizations that are addressing poverty and food insecurity in their communities across the United States. In partnership with the Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Foundation (also a JFN member), Natan will be awarding up to five grants of $30,000 to $35,000 to early-stage organizations and early-stage projects within larger institutions.

Nominations are due July 15.

Members in the Headlines

Writing in Philanthropy Women, Jamie Allen Black of the Jewish Women's Foundation of New York, a JFN member, explains why her foundation is "proudly leaning into" its "relationship-based philanthropy" approach. "We operate by connecting two groups of women who might otherwise struggle to find each other," she writes. "Women with money, time, and/or expertise to give want to reach the women who are channeling their passion to make social impact. Women with a mission to change the world want to reach the women who can help them achieve it. Together, we are both so much more powerful."

In eJewish Philanthropy, Stacie Cherner of the Jim Joseph Foundation (a JFN member) describes the foundation's strong commitment to research and evaluation, noting that most of its grants include a percentage set aside for evaluation and that the foundation also underwrites a variety of applied research.
