In a special message for the holiday, JFN President and CEO AndrĂ©s Spokoiny explains why it is impossible to decouple Judaism and the Jewish people from the Land of Israel.Â
JFN member Shira Ruderman of the Ruderman Family Foundation was awarded the Jerusalem Unity Prize this week in its international category, at a ceremony at the Israeli President's residence.Â
A joint initiative between Jerusalem Mayor Nir Barkat, Gesher, and the families of the three Israeli teens kidnapped and murdered by terrorists in the summer of 2014, the award acknowledges the efforts of organizations and individuals in Israel and the Jewish world who actively work to advance unity throughout Jewish communities and Israeli society.
Learn more about Shira in this episode of JFN's "What Gives" podcast.
Responding to an urgent call for volunteers from Tikva, a Jewish aid organization for orphaned Jewish children of Ukraine, JFN member the Samis Foundation of Seattle provided funding enabling seniors and staff from Northwest Yeshiva High School to volunteer. As part of NCSY's first international relief mission to the region, the group flew to Romania, where they brought suitcases full of toys and games and are playing, tutoring, and providing comfort to children ranging in age from newborn to 16.
Women of Reform Judaism, a JFN member, has awarded more than $300,000 in grants through its Youth Education and Special Projects (YES) Fund to 20 programs that seek to strengthen Jewish life and provide the necessary support for religious, social, and educational growth in North America, Israel, and worldwide. The grants include $40,000 in the area of diversity, equity and inclusion; $50,000 in youth programs; $114,000 in education; and $96,000 for special projects.
Crisis Charitable Commitment, an initiative launched by JFN member Alan S. Davis of the Leonard and Sophie Davis Fund to encourage higher giving among major donors, was featured in Inside Philanthropy this week. The article focused on Crisis Charitable Commitment's new "Big Bet Bundles" effort to raise $41.5 million for three pooled funds that seek to support Black-led organizations, safeguard voting rights, and raise awareness
"about the negative effects of excessive wealth on our society.”Â
A new fellowship funded through a $1.8 million grant from JFN member The Jim Joseph Foundation was highlighted recently in eJewishPhilanthropy. The new CASJE-Collaborative for Applied Studies in Jewish Education fellowship seeks to broaden what counts as “Jewish education” and who it serves by studying a wide range of topics and by recruiting fellows from across the academic world. “We know that who does the research matters, and different researchers have different perspectives and lived experiences,” Stacie Cherner, director of learning and evaluation at Jim Joseph, told eJP. “I think that we want to make sure that research is representative of the diverse perspectives of the Jewish community and all that entails.” (Learn more about CASJE's work in this recent webinar series.)
