FROM THE PRESIDENT'S DESK
Mourn the Past, But Build a Better Future (Tisha B'Av 5782)
In a special message for Tisha B'Av, which begins at sundown this Saturday, JFN President and CEO Andrés Spokoiny writes, "The Jewish attitude to our greatest national loss was twofold: introspection and transformation. After the churban (destruction) we asked ourselves what in our behavior as a people contributed to our demise (famously, the rabbis identify sin’at chinam, internecine hatred, as the culprit). The idea was not to wallow in guilt – after all Judaism rejects a simplistic view by which calamity is always a punishment for a sin – but to strive to be better."
State of Philanthropy Tech Survey
The Technology Association of Grantmakers invites all grantmaking organizations to complete its 2022 technology survey by August 26.
The 2022 State of Philanthropy Tech survey builds on past surveys and includes questions related to IT budgets; IT staffing; staff turnover and burnout; remote work policies; systems selection for GMS, CRM, remote work enablement, etc.; and cybersecurity breaches, training, and tools.
JFN has no formal relationship with the Technology Association of Grantmakers, but we are sharing this information because we think it will be of interest to our members and will yield useful data for the field.
NEWS
Losses in the JFN Family
JFN mourns the recent passing of Eli Evans and Phyllis Bernstein. May their memories be for a blessing.
Eli served as Chairman of the Board of The Covenant Foundation for 22 years and helped envision and gain support for a program of grants and awards that remain the backbone of the Foundation’s success today. He was also the first president of The Charles H. Revson Foundation and was the author of several books about Southern Jewish history. Learn more about him here.
Phyllis co-chaired the economic development committee of JFN's Social Venture Fund for Jewish-Arab Equality and Shared Society. An advocate for Israel's Bedouin community, she spent six weeks each year living in the Negev teaching English and art in Rahat and other Bedouin communities.

Members in the Headlines
eJewish Philanthropy reported on the Harold Grinspoon Foundation's "Aspen in August" gathering this week. “These couple of days together…in this spectacular setting help us to relax and regroup and reconnect,” Winnie Sandler Grinspoon, president of the foundation and a JFN board member explained. “These gatherings always lead to further conversations and partnerships, and deepening relationships, which is what it's all about."
