An Insider's View of Public and Private Philanthropy

Writing in the Journal of Jewish Communal Service, Charles "Chip" Edelsberg, Executive Director of the Jim Joseph Foundation, shares the differences between federation and foundation fundraising and how these two distinct fields influence and support one another. 

Federations often channel money from donors toward organizations that reflect the donor's values while foundations are specifically concerned with the results of their gifts. As well, private philanthropy has become more and more professionalized over the years, making it distinct from public philanthropy.
