How did a legendary Jewish activist influence a Jewish artist to launch a national art project rooted in the Jewish tradition of tzedakah? Learn the answer to that question and many more in this CANVAS conversation with Ruth Messinger, Caron Tabb, and Jewish Arts Collaborative. CANVAS is a Jewish arts and culture funding collaborative incubated at JFN.Â

Fifty JFN West members came together in Los Angeles on Monday and Tuesday for Be the Story, JFN West's first-ever in-person regional gathering. Focusing on the art of philanthropic storytelling, funders from throughout the JFN West region reconnected with peers, networked with colleagues, and learned new skills.
“There was so much excitement in the air as our members greeted new and longtime friends after being apart for the last few years,” said JFN West Director Tzivia Schwartz Getzug. "Even the most seasoned storytellers learned and practiced new skills to effectively communicate with their trustees, donors, collaborators, and others.”
And it was just the beginning of the story...

The Rosalinde and Arthur Gilbert Foundation is endowing the executive director position at Hillels on two University of California campuses: Los Angeles and Berkeley, gifts featured this week in eJewish Philanthropy. (The foundation was also one of the sponsors of this week's JFN West regional gathering.)
In the latest issue of Sapir, published by JFN member the Maimonides Fund, JFN member Nigel Savage writes about Israel and the "empathy deficit." In his essay, Nigel, who is the founder and former CEO of the Jewish environmental group Hazon, encourages funders to invest in programs that facilitate respectful arguments and that bring together progressive American Jews to meet Israelis: "Yes, it’s complicated, and yes, many participants will express themselves in ways that make some uncomfortable. But if young idealistic Jews are not in relation with Israelis who share much of their critique but who live in Israel and deal, every day, with the complexities of living there ... some will surely be pulled, inexorably, into" the group of Jews who are completely anti-Zionist.
JFN members get a free print copy of Sapir mailed to them upon request. Sign up here to claim yours (it will be for the next issue, not the current issue).

This event is sponsored by the David Berg Foundation, a JFN member.
