In recent years, Israel has witnessed rising levels of social tensions and growing public concerns regarding its future as a democratic state. Current data shows worrying trends of democratic backsliding in Israel in almost every criterion; weaker measures of social cohesion, weaker measures of civic solidarity, civic and political distrust in government, increasing data of disinformation, and weakening of reliable media sources.

For many funders, while the situation is distressing, there is at the same time frustration regarding the power of civil society and the ability to influence change during such challenging times.  At the same time, there is much to learn from the experience of philanthropy around the world and in Israel regarding the ability to influence and change the rising tides of anti-democratic discourse.

Dr. Tali Yariv Mashal, an expert on the intersection of democracy and philanthropy and former Executive Director of the Bracha Foundation, will lead the conversation and delve into insights from both local and global pro-democracy initiatives.
