Democracy is under threat globally, presenting urgent challenges for funders and civil society leaders. How can, and should, Jewish funders respond? Hosted by democracy scholar and longtime foundation leader Dr. Tali Yariv-Mashal along with funders and guest experts, this eight-session series will dive deep into the challenges and opportunities in pro-democracy philanthropy.

Branching out from a popular and well-received workshop at the 2025 JFN International Conference, this series will address a wide range of pro-democracy funding areas from education to politics, activism to communication, and will consider the relationship between Jewish and democratic values in Israel, the United States, and around the globe.

Israel–Palestine Conflict: Implications on Democracy and the Role of Civil Society: A Conversation on Democracy, Conflict, and Civil Engagement in Times of Change

Following two tumultuous years among the most consequential in Israel’s history, the Swords of Iron War has reshaped Israel’s society, politics, and global standing. While the full impact is still unfolding, it has already transformed Israel’s strategic environment, deepened polarization, and challenged the public discourse on peace, security, and national identity.

Beyond geopolitics, the war has left deep marks on civic life, testing democracy, liberal values, and the very ability of Israelis to sustain dialogue, empathy, and civic involvement amid fear and uncertainty.

Join us for an evening of reflection and exchange on how war and peace shape the democratic fabric of Israeli society and the role civil society plays in keeping that fabric alive.
