Democracy is under threat globally, presenting urgent challenges for funders and civil society leaders. How can, and should, Jewish funders respond? Hosted by democracy scholar and longtime foundation leader Dr. Tali Yariv-Mashal along with funders and guest experts, this eight-session series will dive deep into the challenges and opportunities in pro-democracy philanthropy.  

Branching out from a popular and well-received workshop at the 2025 JFN International Conference, this series will address a wide range of pro-democracy funding areas from education to politics, activism to communication, and will consider the relationship between Jewish and democratic values in Israel, the United States, and around the globe.

Session 7: Higher Education and Democracy
What role can knowledge, research, and higher education play in the struggle for democracy—and how can philanthropy strengthen this work?

At a time of rising polarization and democratic backsliding, academia plays a critical role in safeguarding truth, fostering open debate, and strengthening democratic values. This session will examine how philanthropy can engage with and support these efforts.

Join us for a timely session exploring the intersections of academia, democracy, and philanthropy during an era of democratic backsliding.

Highlights include:

• Panel discussion with Prof. Neta Ziv (Vice President for Equity, Diversity and Community, Tel Aviv University) and Prof. Noah Drezner (Professor of Higher Education, Teachers College Columbia University. Together, they will address the challenges facing higher education in Israel and the U.S., the importance of academic freedom for protecting democratic values, and the potential role of philanthropy in this space.
• Rajiv Vinnakota, President of the Institute for Citizens & Scholars, on the challenges of U.S. college campuses in times of polarization.
• Reflections from donors in Israel and the U.S. about their philanthropic experiences in higher education and cultural institutions.

בימים של קיטוב עמוק, שחיקה ערכית ונסיגה דמוקרטית, לאקדמיה יש תפקיד קריטי בטיפוח שיח פתוח ובהגנה על ערכים דמוקרטיים. המפגש יבחן כיצד פילנתרופיה יכולה להתחבר למאמץ זה ולחזק אותו.
