Spotlight on the North: Funding a Path to Recovery

The war with Iran may have ended, but on the ground in Israel, urgent needs persist. As we emphasized at the beginning of this crisis, the reconstruction phase is often more demanding, both financially and logistically, than the emergency response itself. When headlines begin to fade, attention and funding often fade as well. Read more to learn about the most urgent needs and how funders can make an impact.

Israel's North is experiencing acute trauma, economic disruption, and lingering insecurity after 18 months of displacement and tension. Our latest update made with the Northern Foundations Forum, Operation "Rising Lion": Spotlight on the North, outlines urgent needs, including critical gaps in shelter infrastructure and emergency equipment, the disproportionate impact on Arab communities, and more. This report highlights the growing role of grassroots leadership and civil society partnerships in meeting them.

Read the full report to learn how funders can respond to emerging needs and take part in long-term recovery and revitalization efforts.

As Israel’s North charts a path toward recovery, a bold opportunity emerges: not just to rebuild, but to reimagine the region as a model of resilience, innovation, and environmental leadership. In this session, representatives from the Tnufa Directorate, the Israeli government agency spearheading the recovery of the North, will present concrete opportunities for philanthropic engagement.

We will discuss renewable energy, nature restoration, climate-positive economic development, and green innovation. Participants will also hear directly from fellow funders already investing in this vision, sharing real-time efforts and lessons from the field. Funders can play a vital role in shaping a thriving future for the region, so please don't miss this program.

Just over a week later, JFN’s Green Funders Forum North America (GFFNA) shifts focus to the U.S., where climate policy is evolving rapidly under a new administration. Join us for a timely briefing on the opportunities and challenges facing climate funders today. Lisa Friedman of The New York Times will share insights from Washington in conversation with JFN member and climate funder Jennifer Laszlo Mizrahi.

Together, these two programs offer a powerful lens into local and global opportunities for philanthropic leadership on climate and sustainability.

Fresh off the success of last week's program with Fact Forward author Dan Gaylin, we’re continuing the conversation with a deeper dive into how funders can use data more effectively... and avoid common pitfalls. This members-only session offers space for shared learning and peer exchange.

Join fellow funders for a discussion on how to avoid data dangers, strengthen nonprofit capacity, and evaluate your grantmaking more meaningfully. Whether you're deep into data or just starting out, this is your chance to connect, reflect, and exchange practical strategies. Dr. Max Baumgarten, Director of North American Operations at The Diane and Guilford Glazer Foundation, who moderated our conversation with Dan Gaylin, will share some of his own learnings from the session and Dan’s book, Fact Forward.
