As Antisemitism Escalates, So Must Our Commitment

In the span of just two weeks, our community has endured a fatal shooting in Washington, D.C., and a violent attack on peaceful demonstrators in Colorado, where several members of our JFN family were present and sustained injuries.

These are not isolated events. They are part of a deeply disturbing trend of antisemitic violence that threatens not only our safety but our sense of belonging. We must demand energetic, lawful action to protect Jewish Americans. As a network rooted in Jewish values and mutual responsibility, we are holding close all those impacted, and working to build a more secure, compassionate, united, and secure future.

JFN will continue our Pro-Democracy Philanthropy series with the third session: Supporting Activism in Times of Democratic Backsliding

Dr. Tali Yariv-Mashal will lead a conversation exploring how philanthropy can support civic activism in moments of democratic crisis—activism that includes, among other forms, advocacy, mobilization, and resistance to anti-democratic trends. Yonatan Levy, PhD candidate at the London School of Economics and Research Fellow at Molad – the Center for the Renewal of Israeli Democracy, will draw on his research to explore common patterns in how democracies unravel and how civic activism can respond with creativity, persistence, and strategic clarity.

Key questions we’ll explore:

  • What kinds of activism can philanthropy support, and what types of impact can be expected?
  • What are the ethical and strategic considerations when funding civic activism, especially when it includes elements of resistance?
  • How can philanthropic investment in activism also help build long-term democratic infrastructure?
  • What is the unique role that individual donors can play in moments of civic mobilization, when defending democratic values depends not on party politics, but on public engagement and democratic norms?

Additional speakers TBA.

We encourage you to register even if you missed the first session in the Pro-Democracy Philanthropy series. Our first two sessions can be viewed by JFN members here.
