Exploring Complexity and the Science of Belonging

Thursday, April 17, 2025

In our newest episode, we learn about the intersections of science, spirituality, and community withDr. Neil Theise. Neil is a professor of pathology at the NYU Grossman School of Medicine and a pioneer in the fields of adult stem cell plasticity and the framework of the body's internal support system. In his book,Notes on Complexity, Neil explores how complexity theory not only unravels the mysteries of biology and physics but also offers a profound lens through which we can view society, spirituality, and even Jewish communal life.

In this conversation, Neil and JFN CEO Andrés Spokoiny talk about how complexity theory reshapes our understanding of leadership, community resilience, and the power of relationships, as well as Neil’s personal journey—from considering rabbinical school to becoming a Zen Buddhist and a leading pathologist. This is a conversation that connects atoms to cities, stem cells to spirituality, and Jewish identity to the fabric of the universe.

Take a listen.

Sweeping changes to federal policy and funding are transforming how the government supports communities—slashing agency budgets, shrinking the federal workforce, and putting key social programs at risk. What does this mean for families, children, LGBTQ individuals, and others who rely on human services? And how should Jewish funders respond?

Join us for a timely conversation with policy experts and philanthropic leaders to unpack the latest developments and explore where funders can step in to meet urgent needs. Come with your questions—and leave with insights to guide your grantmaking in a time of rapid change.

This is a joint session of JFN’s TEN: Together Ending Need,Gender Lens Philanthropy, and Mindfulness & Mental Health Peer Networks.
